This background paper is an attempt to provide a basis for the discussions regarding the development of MIL policies and strategies for Turkey based on the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Policy and Strategy Guidelines. Since the development of MIL policies and strategies requires extensive knowledge on the current situation in the country, this document first examines the existing policies, strategies, regulations, and other formal documents that address MIL either explicitly or implicitly, as well as practices (initiatives and actions), realized in different sectors by different actors. Secondly, conclusions are drawn from the existing situation based on the needs and gaps identified for policy recommendations.
This document was developed within the first phase of the UNESCO’s EU-funded project “Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey”.
